When David was a young boy, in 1960’s, he found out that he was not like the other boys at his school. He didn’t quite know what his feelings were, but he often thought he was not a like normal boy. He tried to act like a normal boy, but “It was like doing an English accent. The more concentrated the attempt, the more self-conscious and unconvincing I became” (Sedaris, 60). Being gay at a young age, Sedaris would have experienced some bullying or discrimination at school, and had to go through many serious thoughts on why he was somewhat different from others. By suffering from judgment of others at a young age, David Sedaris would easily be able to relate to the homosexual athletes, and would gladly support the athletes gain the right that they deserve.
